The first steps you will need to follow when you start a clothing company are similar to starting any other company.  You need to create a name, get business cards, register with the state or province you are in.  Get a license within your city or town.  Most of this can be done without a lawyer, simple talk with the town or city licensing department and you will get some guidance on what you need to do.  I know where I am from there are many different pamphlets on what is required for starting different companies.  You should ask what is expected from a state or province point of view.  If they do not know then ask who you can call on to find out, and if necessary contact your lawyer.

If you are going to be starting an online clothing company you will have to decide on what you will want to do when it comes to working from home or having a warehouse to work from.  There will be a fair amount of shipping small packages so you will want to get in touch with a shipping company as well.

When starting an online clothing company do you know what kind of clothes you will be selling and where you will buy these clothes from?  If this is an extension of an offline company then you know exactly where your clothes are coming from.  If not, then you will want to look for manufactures that will sell to you at a wholesale price.  If you are creating your own but not really a designer and just selling online then you might want to get to the point where you buy in larger numbers from overseas and import the clothing.  This is a whole new set of rules and regulations and you really should speak with a lawyer at this point.

For your online clothing company to be successful you will need to know how to marketing online.  This means building an ecommerce website and promoting the site through pay per click, SEO, or affiliate marketing with people that have websites that rank well but do not sell your product.

If you are going this route you should still at some point think about selling online as well.  When you are first opening a clothing store you will need to find a location that will suite your needs.  Make sure the size is suitable for at least the next three years.  If you are wanting to open a clothing store than I am guessing you have done your research.  If not then you should go to all of the smaller clothing stores in your area.  Look at how these are set up, find out how long they have been in business.  Are they specialty stores or selling everything?  Do they sell indoor or outer wear?  What about boots and shoes, summer and winter clothing?  Are you starting to see what works and what just does not make any sense?  Pay attention to the marketing of these stores and the location.  Do they have specials they advertise?  You can copy some of what they do with your own ideas.  don’t go to far outside the norm, if there is no other clothing stores like you want to open then ask yourself why?  Ask all of your friends if they recall a store similar to what you want to do.  If they remember one and they remember it only lasted a few years then you need to ask them what was good or not good about this type of store.

Once you have collected all of this information then make some changed if necessary and proceed.

If you are a designer and want to start a clothing store then there are a few things to think about with this.  Are your hopes and dreams to build a chain of clothing stores?  How are you selling your clothing now?  As a designer are you manufacturing clothing and selling this in your store or are you strictly a custom designer?  Depending on which one you are focusing on will determine the size of your store.

Any kind of clothing company you decide to start will need clients.  The clients you need will be determined by the type of clothing company you have.  For instance if you have a specialty clothing company for something like wedding dresses then your marketing will be to the end consumer.  This can be done through joint ventures and referrals from other companies in the wedding business, but not in the wedding dress business.

On the other hand if you are starting a clothing company with a store that sells everything to everybody, or something along those lines you will want to create an advertising or marketing campaign that will focus on consumers directly.  Try to advertise to clients that are in the age group that you are selling to.  Use newspapers, flyers, postcards, and online marketing to get your point across.  There is much more you need to know about marketing, but that is outside the scope of this article.
